Penalty Calculator

Medicare Late Enrollment Penalty Calculator (Part B & Part D)

If you missed your enrollment window without qualifying coverage, Medicare applies a permanent surcharge to your monthly premium. Enter how many months you delayed below to estimate your penalty.

Ideal for people who delayed Medicare enrollment after age 65.

How penalties are calculated: Part B adds 10% per full 12-month period delayed. Part D adds 1% per month of the national base premium. Both surcharges are permanent — they apply for as long as you have coverage.

Count the months from when you first became eligible (usually age 65) to when you actually enrolled. Enter 0 if not delayed.

Penalty applies per full 12-month period (e.g. 13 months = 1 period = 10%).

Count months without creditable prescription drug coverage. Enter 0 if you had employer coverage or a standalone Part D plan throughout.

Part D penalty = 1% × national base premium × months delayed.
